The Department of Mechanical Engineering was established in the NICE
campus during the academic year 1995 - 96. Within a short span of
thirteen years, besides an enviable progress in the academic
activities, it has recorded a tremendous growth in terms of its
faculty strength and equipment in the laboratories and workshops.
The department is presently headed by Mr.K.Sudhagar. The
department, as on date has twenty two dedicated
and experienced staff members with four doctoral degree holders and
the remaining with their PG qualifications. The staff members have
more than 15 years of teaching and research experience. Currently,
under graduate course in Mechanical Engineering and post graduations
in M.E. (Manufacturing Engineering) and M.E. (Energy Engineering)
are being conducted by the department. The department has well
furnished class rooms and an air conditioned seminar hall.
The Department has adequate number of
faculty members, which includes Four Professors, Seven Assistant
Professors, Two Senior Lecturers and Seven Lecturers. Four
faculty members possess doctoral degree. All the faculty members
are well experienced and highly qualified with Master's Degree
in various areas of Mechanical Engineering like CAD/CAM,
Mechatronics, Machine Design, Machine Dynamics, Thermal
Engineering, Energy Engineering, Production Engineering,
Industrial Engineering and Safety Engineering. Nine of them are
pursuing their Ph.D. research work. Also to assist the staff in
the laboratories and workshops, there are ten well - qualified
and trained laboratory assistants. Often the members of faculty
are deputed for various training and orientation programmes to
keep their knowledge abreast with the latest in Mechanical
Engineering. Apart from this, industrial visits and guest
lectures are arranged by the department to serve as a means to
our students to get familiarity with the developing and evolving
industrial environment.
Eight laboratories and seven workshops meet the requirements of the
students towards practical training. There are four laboratories
for thermal and fluid experiments and three laboratories for
material science and other related experiments. It has five
workshops to practice basic methodologies in manufacturing
processes and one each
for turning and special machine techniques.
The various laboratories and workshops with good infrastructure in the
departments are namely.
1. Strength of Materials Laboratory
2. Fluid Mechanics and Machine Laboratory
3. Heat Engines Laboratory
4. Instrumentation and Metallurgy Lab
5. Heat and Mass Transfer Laboratory
6. Metrology Laboratory
7. Mechatronics Lab
8. CAD/CAM Laboratory
9. Fitting Shop
10. Carpentry Shop 11. Sheet Metal Shop
12. Foundry Shop
13. Lathe & Special Machines Shop Lathe & Special Machines Shop
14. Smithy Shop
The facilities available in the department are copious that students
can do their final year projects in the campus itself. The gross
investment in the infrastructure of the department is to the tune of
Rs.4 crores.
The CAD/DAM Laboratory is exclusively set for the use of the Mechanical
Engineering students. It has 35 Pentium processor computer systems
with special advanced software for component design, drafting,
modeling and analysis. The latest software includes Ansys,
Pro-E-Wildfire, Auto CAD, Master CAM, Mechanical Desktop, Auto CAD
Inventor Series, CAP Stum 8.0 and CAP Smill 8.0. All the systems are
provided with Internet access. Further the Lab is equipped with a
CNC Trainer Lathe, a CNC Trainer Milling Machine, a special CNC
Trainer with duel machining facility, Programmable TR5 Robotic Arm
etc. Also there is an imported FulLand - 530 CNC Production Lathe
with turrethead.
The Department has established its academic excellence and its
effectiveness by the excellent performance of its students of the
past and present. More than twelve university ranks have been
produced in the last six years. Most of our students are well placed
in various reputed organization in
Federal Association of Mechanical Engineering (FAME), the students'
association, every year, organizes many national seminars and
symposia, which in turn improve their leadership and technical
skills. The department also organizes special training programmes in
advanced software in CAD/CAM. Students are encouraged to present
technical papers in seminars organized by institutions and
industries.
The B.E. programme of the department has been accredited by NBA, AICTE,
